Native to the Andes mountains in Chile and Argentina, Monkey Puzzle Tree is an evergreen conifer which demonstrates some of the best winter hardiness of any southern hemispheric native tree. Noted for its unique shape, it grows in an open pyramid with an umbrella like canopy of whorled spiny branches. Non-flowering, it reproduces by slow growing cones which produce edible seeds similar to pine nuts. Endangered in its native habitat, it makes a stunning specimen tree. Long lived and requiring ample space to reach mature height. Tolerant of clay, loam, sand and highly acidic to slightly alkaline soils.
