Native to Peru, California Pepper Tree was planted extensively by missionaries in the 1800’s and is now iconic to the Golden State. With fine lacy foliage that forms a weeping evergreen canopy, it creates a rounded umbrella of cool shade in the summer, serves beautifully as a privacy screen and provides seasonal interest with attractive clusters of pendulous pinkish red berries. These berries are known as pink peppercorns and can be found added to black and white peppercorns in commercial grinding mixes. Highly drought tolerant and adaptable to poor soil, it is also attractive to birds and butterflies.
