Stewart Avocado is a cold hardy variety that is more frost resistant than many other avocados. Compact, strong and vigorous, it produces dark purple fruits with thin slightly rough skin. Rich and nutty in flavor, they have an oil content of about 20% and are ready to harvest in late fall and early winter. Suitable for planting in a large container or in ground, avocados prefer well draining rich soil. Stewart is a Type A flowering avocado and can be used to pollinate Type B avocados such as Fuerte and Sir Prize. Although Stewart is self-pollinating, improved harvests can be achieved by planting at least one of each flower type. Pro grower’s tip: Whitewashing exposed branches with diluted latex paint in summertime helps prevent sunburn. As one of the better cold tolerant varieties, Stewart is somewhat more sensitive to heat. Cold hardy to 24F.
