Salsa Cordyline forms colorful rounded mounds of variegated red and pink sword shaped leaves. With maturity, it can form a small trunk giving it a palm like appearance. Cordyline is drought tolerant in coastal conditions but will grow more robustly with moderate water. It maintains its vibrant leaves year round, creating interest in the landscape when other plants are dormant. Adaptable to full sun in cool coastal climates but preferring protection from harsh afternoon sun in the inland Central Valley climate. One thing to watch with Cordyline is a sensitivity to flouride which is found in some water systems and can cause brown leaf tips. In these instances, use of collected rain water or distilled water may be preferred.
