Lamb Hass Avocado originated on Bob Lamb’s ranch in Camarillo and is believed to be a descendent of Hass with slightly larger size and improved tolerance of heat and cold. It ripens a month later than Hass, setting fruit between May-November with skin that turns black as it ripens. In flavor and basic appearance it is very similar to Hass, although its habit is more slender and compact, making it a good choice for smaller gardens. Lamb has Type A flowers and is self-fertile but can benefit from proximity to a complementary Type B variety. Examples of complementary types include Fuerte, Pinkerton, Bacon and Sir Prize. Pro grower’s tip: Whitewashing exposed branches with diluted latex paint in summertime helps prevent sunburn. Cold hardy to 28F.
