Purple Prickly Pear Cactus is a brightly colored variety with a bushy habit and soft looking fuzz covered paddles. Native to Northern Mexico and the Southwestern US, it as commonly grown as an ornamental and is a beautiful statement plant in the xeric garden. The nicely contrasting yellow flowers are attractive to hummingbirds and other pollinators. Avoid touching the short glochid bristles since they are irritating to the skin and very hard to see. If this happens accidentally, use the sticky surface of tape to assist in pulling them out.
