‘Gala’ Apples are popular dessert apples that originated in New Zealand and are known for their crispness and perfect balance of tart and sweet. Ideal for salads, fresh eating and baking, Gala apples are an early variety that ripens in August. They are self-fruitful and make good pollinators for other apples but like all self-fruitful varieties, they will be even more abundant if planted near different apple types. Gala apples are especially adaptable to different climates, including warm winter areas with fewer than 500 winter chill hours. They appreciate well-drained loamy soil that is enriched and slightly acidic. Full sun and good air circulation are beneficial for the health of the trees and contribute to optimal fruitfulness.
