Native to Australia, Purple Fernleaf Acacia is a fast growing smaller sized tree with beautiful lacy foliage that emerges purple and ages to a silvery lavender. Evergreen and weeping in form, it has an umbrella shaped canopy and is commonly grown as a single trunk tree or left with lower branches to serve as a screen. Sweetly fragrant yellow flowers emerge in spring and are attractive to hummingbirds and beneficial pollinators. A recipient of the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit, Purple Acacia is low maintenance and drought tolerant once fully established. Not known to be invasive, it has a relatively short lifespan of approximately 30 years which is offset by fast growth of 3 feet or more per year. Prefers well drained soil and responds well to light pruning and shaping, which will increase flowering.
