Blue Torch Cactus is a trunking cactus with branching arms, making it look similar to a miniature Saguaro but in brilliant turquoise blue. Native to Brazil, it becomes tree like with age. Its translucent yellow spines turn gray when mature, eventually becoming surrounded by soft hair like tufts. The powder blue glaucous coloring is brightest on new growth and can be smudged by fingerprints if handled. Also known by the trade name Pilosocereus azureus, although Pilosocereus pachycladus is its official botanical nomenclature. Moderate water is appreciated during the hot growing season, but avoid exposure to wet winter conditions when plants are dormant and susceptible to rot. Prefers well drained soil and requires protection from freezing cold below 30F.
