Shaving Brush Tree is a subtropical ornamental native to Mexico, Central and South America. Depicted in Mayan artwork, it is known for its fat caudiciform trunk, large leaves and attractive flowers that look like a tufted shaving brush, opening and closing in one day. New leaves emerge burgundy and gradually change to green, falling in winter. Both pink and white flowering forms occur. Shaving Brush Tree is excellent planted as a bonsai specimen in a container, where it will remain small and the trunk will fatten and often take on a tortoise shell pattern and texture. Planted in the ground, it will grow taller and the trunk will not be quite so wide. Although it can be drought tolerant when necessary, best growth will be achieved with regular water during the growing season. Can be propagated by seeds or cuttings. Cold hardy to 25-30F with protection.
