Native to the Southwestern United States and Northern Mexico, California Barrel Cactus grows in rocky foothill and canyon terrain and is well adapted to hot dry conditions. This colorful native species typically forms a solitary column of modest height with beautiful spines that emerge bright red and age slowly to gray. Very slow growing, it tends to reach toward the south as it grows giving it another common name, Compass Barrel. Requires a cool rest period to produce prolific blooms. Cold hardy to 20F if kept dry.
