Red Spine Cactus is native to Argentina and is the only member of its genus. Slow growing and long lived, it grows from seed into a globular shape and then gradually extends into a single column reaching up to 5′ in height and 1′ in diameter. It is rare in cultivation and is most commonly seen in botanical gardens and private collections. In its native habitat it is threatened by mining and wildfire. It has tubular flowers that are red in color, full of nectar and shaped similarly to Cleistocactus. Red Spine Cactus has similar cultural care needs to other cactus, including well drained soil and protection from extended periods of winter wet.
