Dioon merolae is a beautiful rare cycad with delicately textured fronds and a very slow growing trunk. It is native to Southern Mexico where very old plants eventually form long snaking trunks however in the home landscape they are such slow growers that they rarely reach more than a few feet in height. Individual plants are male or female and both sexes produce small cones. Cold hardy to about 10F, it will lose its leaves when temperatures drop below 20F. Requires moderate water until it becomes well established, then it is very drought tolerant.
