Euphorbia horrida is commonly known as African Milk Barrel and is sometimes mistaken for a cactus because of its attractive spines and columnar growth habit. A favorite euphorbia of collectors for its compact habit and often twisted and rippled growth. It shows faint striped patterning on its glaucous skin and is often sold as small single offsets but eventually forms larger clumps with maturity. We currently have mature specimen sized plants. Adaptable and easy to grow, it prefers good drainage and regular watering except in the coldest winter months when it is surprisingly tolerant of frost if kept dry. Clumps can easily be divided and rerooted to propagate additional plants.
Warning: As with all other Euphorbias, wounded plants exude a white milky sap which is poisonous and irritating to the skin. Avoid direct contact with skin and especially the mouth and eyes. When working with or propagating Euphorbias best practice is to wear gloves, long sleeves and eye protection.
