Naturally growing in a tight, tidy mound with sturdy stems and continuous blooms from early summer through frost. Each bloom is like a complete bouquet! A minimum of six hours of sun is recommended for smooth hydrangeas for the strongest stems and the most abundant flowers. In hot climates, afternoon protection from scorching sun is beneficial. Although dead heading is not needed during the growing season, prune in early spring just as the new growth begins to emerge on the stems. Remove dead wood and cut the entire plant back by about one-third its total height. This helps to preserve the strong woody base while also encouraging new growth for the best blooming. A 2-3″ (5-7.6 cm) layer of shredded bark mulch helps shallow-rooted hydrangeas to conserve moisture and keep roots growing vigorously, which ensures the best performance. Fertilize in early spring, before new growth begins.
