Native to the Chihuahuan Desert and northeastern Mexico, Mexican Tree Grass is a tough, drought tolerant plant. With long grass-like leaves, each tipped with a spine. Forming a large symmetrical sphere atop short thick trunk-like caudex, it is very architectural in appearance and looks spectacular in containers or as a focal point in the xeric garden. In late summer, it produces a tall flower spike up to 10 feet tall covered with cream colored flowers. Slow growing and drought tolerant, it will grow slightly faster with additional water but avoid watering from above to prevent rotting the crown.
