Prickly Pear Cactus includes a broad range of species, most with paddle shaped leaves. Opuntia sulphurea is unique in its smaller size and intricate long white needles, which are stiff and irregular in appearance. Native to South America it grows in a broad range of habitats, making it adaptable and easy to grow in the xeric garden. The sulphur yellow flowers contrast nicely with the green paddles and are attractive to hummingbirds and other pollinators. Rare in the United States, Opuntia sulphurea is stunning in dry gardens and containers. Like all prickly pear cactus, it benefits from coarse well drained soil.
