Whale’s Tongue Agave is one of the most picturesque agaves for the home landscape. It famously forms large rosettes of extra broad, pale blue leaves which become wider and more stunning as the plant matures giving it the appearance of a giant silver flower. Native to the mountainous regions of Nuevo Leon, Mexico it is one of the most cold hardy agaves having survived temperatures as low as 5F. Unlike some species, Agave ovatifolia is not known for prolific offsetting. This makes it easier to maintain a neat appearance in the landscape. If additional plants are desired, wait until bloom time and allow the stalk to mature. Agave ovatifolia is known for producing hundreds of small plants, known as bulbils, along the stalk. These can be harvested to make new plants after the parent plant matures and dies. Agave ovatifolia is heat tolerant and sun loving but like many agaves it thrives and looks its best with some protection from late afternoon sun in harsh inland climates. Like all agaves it requires excellent drainage and does not tolerate wet feet.
