Monkey Tail Cactus is fast growing and easy to care for. As the long trailing stems mature, they become covered with thick soft hair making them resemble furry tails. Native to rocky cliff face habitats in Bolivia, they appreciate moderate water when actively growing and should be kept dry during periods of dormancy. Because they grow quickly, they benefit from annual repotting and periodic fertilizing with a cactus fertilizer low in nitrogen and high in potassium. They will not necessarily need a larger pot when repotting, but when given fresh soil they will reward you with new growth. Monkey Tail Cactus requires bright diffused light to maintain thick tails. If they do not receive enough light, you will notice new growth becoming thin.

Madagascar Ocotillo is a tall upright succulent with silver spines and small round green leaves. The narrow stems reach upward and curve snake-like, giving the plant an unusually attractive architectural appearance. Deciduous in winter, this unique plant is threatened in its natural habitat. It grows well in hot climates and large established plants may withstand temperatures as low as 20F. Smaller plants may be damaged below 25F but can easily be grown in pots and moved to protected areas in cold weather. Plant in well drained soil and refrain from watering during periods of dormancy.

Giant Bird of Paradise is a slow grower that becomes more breathtaking the larger it gets. Perfect poolside or as a foundation plant anywhere a bold tropical statement is wanted. The flowers, which appear as the plant matures, resemble white bird heads with blue tongues.
Forming a large multitrunked clump, it is excellent as a garden border or privacy screen. If a somewhat smaller clump is desired it can be planted in large containers to limit growth. Because of its large size and spread, care should be taken in selecting an initial planting location not too close to the house or walkways. The grayish green foliage is evergreen and frost tender. It will bloom almost year round in frost free zones and regrow in warm weather where frost occurs. Seasonal maintenance includes removal of any damaged leaves or unwanted stalks.
