Lion’s Head Japanese Maple is an heirloom cultivar, dating back to the 1880’s. Unique among Japanese maples for its compact canopy of thick, glossy, deeply textured leaves. Emerging foliage is beautiful dark green lasting well into fall when leaves ultimately transform to gold suffused with rich shades of crimson red. When it forms its dense ruffled autumn crown, it’s easy to see why this regal beauty is called Lions Head Maple.

‘Bloodgood’ Japanese Maple is known for consistent color, maintaining shades of deep red foliage throughout the growing season. This highly sought after cultivar is slightly smaller than the standard red leafed form with graceful ornamental branches. A standout patio tree and dramatic color accent in the landscape with architectural layers of darkly colored foliage, ‘Bloodgood’ can be trained as a multi-trunk specimen or as a low branching single-trunk tree. Like all Japanese Maples, it prefers regular water and protection from extreme heat and drying winds.
