Golden Barrel Cactus is an essential pick for cactus lovers. The pleasing rounded form makes a big impact, particularly when back lit by the sun. Its translucent yellow spines glow brightly when illuminated. With time, individual barrels may multiply and form clumps. Offsets may be left to grow larger or can be removed to start new plants elsewhere. Golden Barrel Cactus look especially wonderful planted in colonies and can be used in multiples to make rows or patterns in the dry garden. Beautiful in containers, but much heavier than they appear due to the large amount of water stored within. Mature in-ground plants are cold hardy to 15F, but young plants and potted specimens benefit from some protection in the mid 20s.

Silver Torch Cactus is native to high mountain regions in South American where it grows in clumps of tall, narrow singular columns. Its striking appearance comes from the flexible white hairs that grow over its spines, resembling a soft, furry coat of hair. During flowering, red tubular blossoms appear up and down the trunk, attracting hummingbirds and other pollinators. Plant in cactus mix, watering weekly in the summer and reducing to once every five weeks in winter. During hard freezes, styrofoam cups can be used to protect the tops from cold damage. To prevent rot during dormancy, keep plants dry during cold weather. Excellent in containers. May be grown indoors if bright light can be provided.
