Pink Muhly Grass is a US native grass with finely textured green leaves and showy ornamental pink plumes. Forming graceful rounded clumps, it adds textural interest to the landscape even in winter. Excellent as a ground cover, it is fast growing and drought tolerant once established. Recommended as an alternative to invasive grasses, Pink Muhly Grass is recommended by the California PlantRight Program. Adaptable to poor soil and difficult locations with reflective heat, it is well suited to rock gardens and near swimming pools. Considered an herbaceous perennial, in remains evergreen in mild climates and may die back to the ground where winters are cold. It will look its best if spent blooms are cut back before each growing season. Division is not necessary but can be performed every 2-3 years in early spring if desired.

An Australian native, Dwarf Mat Rush is forms soft airy clumps of long evergreen leaves. Requiring little to no maintenance, it is tough and adaptable to a variety of conditions including sun, moderate shade, drought and clay soil. Beautiful when allowed to cascade over a planter, in summer it forms bloom stalks with sweetly scented yellow flowers. Excellent in dry borders and tolerant of salt spray and coastal conditions. Dwarf Mat Rush is a great ground cover and an attractive replacement for lawns. Propagates by seed and rhizome divisions, but does not spread invasively within the landscape.

Japanese Blood Grass is a heat loving ornamental grass that is native to Japan and Asia. Spreading by rhizomes, it forms a spreading clump of broad green blades tipped with red. Attractive near water features and striking in an Asian Garden. ‘Red Baron’ is a lower growing cultivar which is reported to be less invasive than the plain green leaved selection. Very effective planted in containers or tubs, it looks especially dramatic when back lit by the sun. Leaves are semi-evergreen and may go dormant in cold weather. In this case, cut back old growth and fresh leaves will appear in spring.

One of the most heat tolerant of the Blue Fescues, Elijah Blue Fescue quickly forms small dense mounds of icy blue leaves. Beautiful in a rock garden, planted near boulders, or planted in mass as a ground cover. A cool season grass, it should be cut back to 3 or 4 inches in early spring to keep a neat appearance and encourage lush new growth. Tolerates moderate drought once established and achieves its best color in full sun. Must be planted in well drained soil.

Showy flowers on a plant that grows more compact and is more cold resistant than the species. Dwarf Pampas Grass forms sweeping clumps of evergreen foliage with tall plumes of fluffy creamy white blooms. Fast growing and easy to care for, it makes an excellent specimen plant and is useful planted in mass as a privacy screen. Easily adapts to a variety of soils as long as they are well drained. Nearly sterile, it does not reseed aggressively in the garden. Even so, care should be taken when planted near sensitive habitats. Prune back hard in late winter before new growth emerges.

Orange New Zealand Sedge forms finely textured mounds of thin glossy leaves that emerge bronze green and mature to a fiery orange. Better behaved than other Salvias, ‘Little Kiss’ Salvia remains dense and compact at only 18” high, but still has all of the qualities we love. These tough, low water, easy care perennial shrubs will attract pollinators from spring through fall.
Prefers well drained soil. Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer each spring and summer. Can prune to shape when actively growing.
